Abstract"World War I tore at the very fabric of American society. The still young republic, founded on the civil liberties of its citizens, but still refusing to extend these protections to its minorities, now infringed on the basic rights of Americans to do exactly what the founding fathers did in the eighteenth century: question the power of government to regulate the lives of individuals."
