Abstract"The Brothers" appears in German in Max Cohnheim's Columbia, a weekly German-language newspaper launched in Washington, D.C., on 17 October 1863. In four installments, the translation was published apparently without the knowledge or consent of Alcott. Although the basic plot and content of "The Brothers" was replicated in the translation, it did feature noteworthy changes from the original, adding to an understanding of how works by Anglophone American authors such as Alcott were received by their non-Anglophone fellow citizens as well as of the unique perspectives that multilingual Americans brought to major political questions of the time.
