Abstract"As in . . . emigration novels, the almanacs presented a positive self-image based on allegedly German qualities such as integrity, industry, honesty, and abiding the law. For many emigrants, to insist on distinctive norms and values strengthened the awareness of an ethno-cultural otherness. This was eventually consciously directed against the homeland, considered to be backward."
