AbstractMoundridge Schweitzer German (MSG) is a strictly oral moribund heritage variety of German spoken in and around Moundridge, Kansas, approximately 30 miles northeast of Wichita, among a community of Mennonites whose dialect most closely resembles Eastern Palatinate. Today, there are estimated to be fewer than three dozen speakers remaining, all over the age of 65. The speakers are approximately the third or fourth generation of MSG speakers in the area, and also the last. This article provides historical background, describes sociolinguistic aspects, and discusses distinctive linguistic features of the MSG community.
