AbstractLetters originally written by Jakob Adam (1905-1986) from the Galician-German settlement of Neudorf, near Kolomea (today Western Ukraine), to his parents in Astoria, New York, during the fall and winter of 1939/40. They document the outbreak of the Second World War, the quick victory of the German Wehrmacht over Poland, the occupation of Eastern Galicia by the Soviet Union, and finally the resettlement of the Galician Germans "home to the Reich," which began with hope but ended in disappointment and hardship. Also contains a letter from Jakob to his cousin Johann (written from memory 30 years later) describing the experiences of the resettlement in the Reich.
