Part 1 is written in what was once a bound booklet, the cover now missing. It is 22 pages long, and measures 16 x 20 cm. The first section of the notebook (pages 1 through 9) consist of New Testament gospel accounts. The second section (pages 10-22) is titled "Lebens-Erinnerungen." It covers the time from his earliest memories, through childhood, through his early ears of learning and working carpentry with his brothers, and ends at the time of his conscription into the Hanoverian army in 1865.

Part 2 is also contained in what was once a bound notebook, cover missing. It begins with page 1, but after page 27, the booklet must be turned over and read from the other end. There are 51 handwritten pages. Part 2 measures 21 x 18 cm. It begins with penmanship practice, with Johann copying old receipts, followed by portions of a Catechism, Gospels of St. Matthew and St. Mark, and a continuation of Johann II's Lebens-Erinnerungen.

Part three is written on ledger paper, no cover, with 33 pages measuring 32 x 21 cm. Part 3 contains:

A description of Johann II's last weeks in the Hanoverian army and his involvement in the Batle of Langensalza, 27 June 1866. Johann also includes a casualty list.

Johann II's departure from Oste Dike, his voyage to America, and his early years there.

A tabular chart of the family's Minnesota farm, ranging from 1871 through 1877

"The Oregon Story," commenting on his and his brother Claus's 1877 move from Minnesota to Oregon.

A family ancestry chart

A family timeline chart covering the years 1856-1880, including events both in America and in Germany.
NotesAll three parts of Johann II's Lebens-Erinnerungen have been scanned, transcribed, and translated into English by Merlin Schlichting. [See: Box -- Schlichting Family Materials]

In addition, the three parts of this journal are presented as an uninterrupted narrative in the 1989 booklet New World Beginnings for the Schlichting Family, with an English translation by John August Schlichting.
