AbstractFollows the lives of Katharine Deininger (1872–1964) and Gottlieb Hinderer (1866-1951), from the Brend, Alfdorf, and Kaisersbach communities in the Swabian region of Wuerttemberg, in southwestern Germany, to the lives they created in America. The two left Bremen aboard the steamer Havel on 14 December 1891. After working on rental farms in Iowa, they became landowners in southwestern Minnesota. "Katharine's resilience during both World Wars and the Great Depression provides a powerful portrayal of immigrant life and family endurance through hardships."
