AbstractMelchior Jäntsch / Jaentsch was born in 1834 in Bosenheim, Bad Kreuznach, Rhineland-Palatinate. He left for America in 1853, and settled in Wisconsin. Melchior married Anna Maria Hoffmann, most likely in Germantown, Wisconsin, in about 1857. Between March 1862 and December 1863, Melchior and his family moved to Milwaukee. In 1860, Melchior filed a Declaration of Intention to become a United states citizen. He enlisted in Company H of the 45th Wisconsin Infantry on November 19, 1864, and was an early member of the City of Milwaukee Police Department, having joined as early as 1866.
