AbstractFort Laramie, Wyoming Territory, began as a frontier fur trading post in the 1830s and was purchased by he United States government in 1849. It is estimated that over three hundred thousand people passed the fort during their migration westward. Of the multitude, many were Swiss, including Private Jacob Haudenschild, Sergeant Leodegar Schnyder, Dr. Rudolph B. Hitz and Captain Alfred von Wattenwyl.
