AbstractExamines a popular business handbook, The Business Guide by James L. Nichols (1854-1895), first published in 1886. The analysis focuses on determining its place within the development of marketing thought and education. Includes biographical sketch of Nichols, who was born in Germany and came to America at around age six. The Business Guide was translated into German by F. W. Heidner, Professor at North Western College, Naperville, Illinois, and published as Der Geschäftsführer in 1890.
