AbstractHenrich Bartel / Barthel was born 1664 in Epstein, Darmstadt, Germany. He and his wife, Maria Catharina (Hack), and their five children were recorded leaving Holland for London in June 1709; shortly thereafter they and other Palatines were shipped to New York by the British government in an effort to make its northern colonies profitable and secure. The author details Benjamin P. Bortles, who married Diadama Reniff, daughter of Almira Brisee and Charles Reniff, who served in the Revolutionary War. The Bortles raised their children in Waterford, Erie County, Pennsylvania.
