AbstractThis article provides the English translation of a journal begun in Chicago on December 6, 1879, by Johann Kraemer. Kraemer was born in Kreis Daun, Rhineland-Palatinate, in 1832. He relates events from his life in Kreis Daun, his marriage to Gertrude Spohr in 1863, his family's journey to America in 1866, and their life in Chicago in the 19th century. Johann describes the dangerous work he had in a stone quarry, including an 1875 mine explosion.
