Contents | A collection of 164 letters and postcards written between 1932 and 1942 by Anna (nee Jagow) Seifert (1876–1958) to her son, Lester W. J. “Smoky” Seifert (1915–1996). Her letters span a decade when Lester went to Northwestern College in Watertown, Wisconsin, attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison for a master’s degree, pursued doctoral studies at Brown University in Rhode Island, and conducted fieldwork recording the Pennsylvania Dutch language in rural southeastern Pennsylvania. Also includes correspondence from the donor (3 pages), a photograph of Anna Jagow with her two sisters, a newspaper clipping noting the death of Gerhardt Balg (1852-1933), and a Sony microcassette recording made in 1996 of Lester Seifert speaking with a Mr. Sasse in the Oderbruch region, the low-lying marshlands along the Oder River that was once part of Prussia and today straddles the border of eastern Germany and Poland, from which Anna's family had come in the 1830s. |
