AbstractTranslation of a letter written by Jakob Hessel to relatives in his home village of Gau-Algesheim, a small town west of Mainz in Hesse-Darmstadt (now Rheinland-Pfalz). The letter "reveals the joys, frustrations and heartaches of the new Americans" in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin.
