AbstractThe transition from the German to the English language in the Lutheran Church "has been a cause of friction from colonial days until the present time. In various parts of the land the story has repeated itself--the older generation desired to worship God in the language it brought from Europe, whereas the younger generation . . . demanded worship in [English} and, deprived of that, either gave up the church altogether, or joined English speaking Protestant churches. Statisticians have determined that the Lutheran church in this country . . . should have a very much larger membership. That it has not is due very largely to the language problem."
