AbstractWorking from earlier work by Jonathan James Wolfe, the author offers new insights on German immigration to Arkansas by comparing it with the "events which almost four decades earlier had brought a much larger influx of Germans to the Texas wilderness." Brister asserts that immigrant guidebooks, in particular the works by Traugott Bromme, were more influential than Wolfe indicates, though "the question as to the accuracy of their information" is another matter. Brister claims that "a significant factor affecting the rush of immigrants to Texas over Arkansas . . . is the popular emigrant guidebook." Provides translations of two representative portions from the sixth edition of Bromme's Hand- und Reisebuch fuer Auswanderer nach den Vereinigten Staaten von Nord-Amerika (1849), one on Arkansas, and one on Texas.
