Abstract | 'Cultural' German-American Studies would allow the study of literature to become more fully integrated into the field of German-American Studies as a whole. A cultural studies approach would permit a theoretically grounded outreach towards those burgeoning and exciting new fields of inquiry within the American academy that carry the name 'studies'; such as ethnic, minority, diaspora, etc. It would also allow German-American Studies to engage in useful dialogue with Germanists now working on Gastarbeiterliteratur, German colonial literature, and the literature of Germans in the diaspora of Central Europe. There is a need to recognize and celebrate not only the diversity, but also the dislocations, and the discontinuities that constituted German-American experience in the last three-plus centuries. |
