AbstractA mother and her young son, Leo, arrive by ship in New York. They then travel by train to relatives in "Ch--." One of the railway employees speaks German. They arrive at the home of the woman's uncle, but soon realize they are not welcome. When she tries to cook something, the eldest daughter tells her "Hier wird amerikanisch gekocht und nicht deutsch." When she uses the sewing machine, she later finds it locked. She attends church on All Soul's Day, but the family does not. The young mother and Leo move to a new place; her relatives help her, but afterwards do not visit. Christmas approaches. "Der Winter ist doch garstig in Amerika," the young mother says, and soon falls ill. A priest comes, and they light the candles on the Christmas tree. Leo comes in and is enchanted. His mother dies. Later, Leo becomes a priest.
