| Abstract | Part XII - XIV. Henry Merkl continues to view scenes of his life as he lays dying. He travels by ship to Italy, and by train to Rome, where he falls back into his old habits, living only for himself without a thought of eternity -- "im alten Saus und Braus aller Liederlichkeiten." His only concern is the inevitable loneliness of the evenings, when the wine taverns close and the last bit of human company disappears, and he is alone in his desolate room. More scenes flow past, and Henry receives a note from Fritz informing him that their mother has died. Henry attends church. Meanwhile, as Henry lays in his deathbed, his landlady gives him a piece of ice. More visions follow. [To be concluded.] |
