Abstract | "The past 12 months have brought an unprecedented one million immigrants to the United States. . . . from Italy, Austria-Hungary, and Russia. A large percentage of these immigrants are Catholic, about 300,000. Will they find enough churches in the big cities where they usually go where they can hear the Word of God in their own language? Priests who understand them and whose aim is to protect them from unbelief and socialism? Recall the harsh words of the 1880s: "Let them learn English, or let them go --" Fortunately, the Holy Father has proclaimed that "the religious needs of immigrants must be taken care of under all circumstances." |
