| Abstract | Notes the coming publication of The Catholic Encyclopedia (1907). "Als Hauptredakteur wird [German American] George Herbermann, Phil. D L. L. D. Professor der lateinische Sprache im City Collegium von New York genannt." The article notes that such a work is as urgently needed as an English-language Catholic newspaper, but fears the undertaking will fail due to the indifference of America's English-speaking Catholics. It expresses dismay that the publication of the encylopedia was given to a Protestant firm (Robert Appleton Company), that the editor-in-chief is a layman, and that "man hat es auch nicht der Muehe wert gefunden . . . die Gutachtung unserer Bischoefe enzuholen. Hoffentlilch haben wir es nicht mit einem ordinaeren Machwerk (makeshift), wie das zu seiner Zeit erschienene Catholic Dictionary, zu tun." An English translation of Wetzer und Welte's Kirchenlexikon, the article concludes, would be preferable. |
