Abstract[Story continued] Gretchen attends the ball with Walter Wendenkop, a Protestant. Gretchen and Walter dance often. Lorenz is sitting unnoticed in a corner, watching. As the party goes on, the behavior of the unsupervised youth becomes boisterous and brazen, and Gretchen wants to leave. At first Walter tries to maker her stay; when she insists on leaving, Walther says he will take her home, although he mumbles derogatory things about the "Gruenhorn."

Lornez follows the couple, who are arguing. They turn a dark corner, and Lorenz hears a scream. He rushes forward and pummels Walter. Gretchen runs off like a deer, Lorenz follows, calling her name. Lorenz catches Gretchen just before she runs into the river; she faints in his arms. He takes her home, where the grandmother and mother tend to her. Later, Lorenz notes the dark looks from youths on the street corner, and knows revenge is coming.

In the second section, the factory workers have declared a strike, and Walter Wendenkop takes an active part in the negotiations. Walter and a few others plant dynamite within the factory; the explosion knocks Lorenz to the ground, dazed. Lorenz is accused of the destructive act, and is taken to a jail cell. The grandmother begins to pray the rosary incessantly.
