AbstractA Catholic family (mother, father, two children and a grandmother) immigrates to America. The story begins aboard ship during a storm. A fight breaks out. "Sie pollern zusammen auf den Boden. Auseinander! Dem einen wird das blitzende Messer entwunden. Weinen, Haenderingen. The family arrives at New York, and receives accommodations at the Leo House, a Catholic guesthouse founded in 1889 on West 23rd Street in New York that played a significant role in the lives of German immigrants in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They then embark on a 36 hour train ride to their destination, given here only as "X."
