AbstractCharles Frederick Schlaberg Jr. (CFS) was born in Hildesheim, Niedersachsen, Germany, on January 25, 1794, to a "patrician-merchant class" family of weavers in the flax, wool, and yarn trade. Covers his youth (1794-1806); Hildesheim under French occupation (1806-1812); CFS in England and Scotland (1812-1828); the 1824 CFS bankruptcy; his religious affiliations; the discovery of a portrait of CFS painted in London in 1827 and a Robert Adams mantelpiece from Edinburgh; the 1828 migration to Canada; early years in LaChute (1829-1854); troubles between CFS and his son-in-law, Charles Lowe (1855-1867); later Canadian years (1860-1879); resuming European connections, and his final years in Minnesota (1879-1883).
