AbstractThe first scholar to investigate Texas German extensively, specifically New Braunfels German (NBG), was Fred Eikel, Jr. (1909-1967), himself a native speaker of NBG. Eikel’s most important contribution to scholarship on Texas German is his 1954 study, “The New Braunfels German Dialect,” which documents NBG as spoken in the early 1950s and was intended to be his doctoral dissertation at Johns Hopkins University. Although it was never published in book form, a number of its findings were eventually published in several shorter articles, and it remains a foundational work on Texas German. This paper assesses Eikel’s place in the history of linguistics, providing a brief biographical sketch of Eikel, discusses his publications on Texas German, and concludes with an assessment of his place in the history of the field.
