AbstractWhether in the first language (L1) or beyond (L2, L3, etc.), identifiable differences between men and women’s speech and language use often coincide with broader ideas of individual identity and language attitudes. The question then arises as to how gender, as a socially constructed identity marker, can be interpreted as a factor in individual speaker’s reported skills in an endangered or dying language variety, as well as in their more general attitude towards speaking dialects and languages of lower prestige within a specific society. The present study investigates the potential for gendered language maintenance and loss among speakers of Texas German following three research questions.
