Hubert L. Tilsner was born 1862 in Posen, Prussia; died 1928 in Milwaukee. He came to America in either 1881 (p. 32) or 1880 (p. 87). He attended Northwestern University in Chicago and worked as a dentist in Milwaukee. He married Augusta Lemke on February 24, 1884 (p. 32). They had a daughter W. F. Bruett (p. 34), and grandchildren Virigina and Harold Bruett.

Interests
Was involved in / documented several organizations and events that sought to preserve German culture in America (Schiller-Goethe Monument, Washington Park, Milwaukee, 1908; Deutscher Tag, 1908; Turnerverein Milwaukee, Zentral-Ausschuß der Alten Ansiedler, Deutscher Landwehr Männerverein Milwaukee, Steuben-Denkmal-Projekt, Deutscher Sport Club, Deutscher Pressclub). Advocated the repeal of Prohibition; was nearly struck by a bullet from the Schlitz Park shooting gallery. Letter writing was a hobby, and Tilsner maintained correspondence with nearly 200 individuals. Includes an image of the Milwaukee Turn-Halle, 1864.
