| Abstract | German-American singing festivals with thousands of participants and visitors were a constant but changing element in the cultural landscape of the United States between 1849 and 1914. They helped the immigrants construct a German-American (musical) ethnicity and assert their status in U.S. society. German-American singing festivals consisted of a mixture of highbrow and lowbrow culture, and the festivals’ content and form were the object of much discussion among the migrants themselves. |
