Abstract"Karl Pflaume, educated in agriculture and politically active during the 1848 German Revolution, emigrated from his home village of Aschersleben, Saxon-Anhalt, in 1851 and settled on a densely forested piece of land just four miles southeast of the young port village of Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Twelve years later, with a wife and two children, he . . . returned to his homeland, completely disillusioned by his America experience. However, he and his wife, Amalie Hornung Pflaume, left behind a treasure trove of letters and other writings that reveal the joys and hardships the young couple experienced in the New World.”
