MKI AnnotationGeorge Heinrich Schlapp was born in Hesse, the eldest son of a teacher and 1848 revolutionary. The family came to America in 1851, settling on a farm near Burlington, Iowa. George's father had an extensive library, from which he instructed his children on winter evenings. Georg Schlapp devoted himself to the brewery business, volunteered in the Civil War, and returned to brewing in Ft. Madison, Iowa, for twenty years, until ill health forced him to retire. He then traveled in Europe and America, taking notes from which he later developed his writings.
