AbstractMaria Elisabeth Feyertag / Feiertag was born in 1830 in northern Bavaria. Deciding life would be better in America, she studied English and immigrated in 1847. She lived for a few years in New York City, where she married Frederic Schmidt in 1849. Two years later they moved to Madison, Indiana, where Frederic worked as a butcher. Maria bore thirteen children, raising nine to adulthood, and she became a midwife. In 1869 the family moved to Indianapolis, where Frederic died three years later. Maria enrolled in the newly established local medical school, Central College of Physicians and Surgeons, and graduated in 1881. She practiced medicine until 1900, while also volunteering with charities that served the German community. Maria died in 1904.
