AbstractArticle is primarily about Geronimo and the Apache campaigns of the American Southwest, but begins with a description of Johann Spring's early life. Born in 1845 in Thun, Switzerland, Spring came to America and enlisted in the army in 1864. He served in the all-German Seventh New York infantry regiment during the Civil War, and re-enlisted for three years of service in Arizona.
