Abstract"Over sixty years before Jack Ottman founded Ottman & Company in New York City's West Washington Market, his great-uncle Philipp Ottmann set up shop at the Fulton Market at the South Street Seaport on the lower east side of Manhattan. We don't know exactly what prompted Philipp, aged 18 in 1850, to leave his family's town of Meisenheim (in what is now southwest Germany, near Alsace) to come to America, but we do know from the town records that the Ottmanns were 'fleischermeister' (master butchers), perhaps for generations."
