MKI Annotation"The Germanistic Society of America was incorporated in 1908 for the purpose of furthering a knowledge of German culture and civilization in the United States and vice versa of American culture and civilization in Germany. At the end of World War II, when Germany lay prostrate and German libraries were unable to procure American publications . . . the second aim of this Society seemed to be of paramount importance. In this way German research-men were familiarized with the latest advances made in this country in agriculture, chemistry, medicine, physics, and other sciences without a knowledge of which the social and economic rehabilitation of the German people would have proceeded much more slowly. When the German libraries were again in a position to take care of their most pressing needs, the Germanistic Society decided to resore the much-coveted Fellowship for study in Germany, to give increased support to the long-established academic information center, the Deutsches Haus, and to build up there an up-to-date special library on modern Germany. For several years mimeographed lists of new accessions were distributed free to our members, to libraries, scholars, and other individuals. The favorable reception of these lists throughout the United States has been so encouraging that [we decided] to have them printed wiht the addition of brief information about the author and the contents of each book. List No. 1 deals with books on history and politics; No. 2 will take up books of literature and on literature; No. 2 encyclopedias, dictionaries, and other linguistic aids; No. 4 books on art, music, philosophy, religion, and other subjects. No. 5 will start a new series beginning again with history and politics."
