AbstractBorn in Ankum (Osnabrück district of Lower Saxony), Rattermann came to America with his family in 1846. He worked a variety of jobs in Cincinnati and Kentucky before founding the German Mutual Insurance Company of Cincinnati and Hamilton County in 1858. Rattermann also co-founded the German Pioneer Society of Cincinnati, was editor of Der Deutsche Pionier, amassed a large collection of books and materials related to German immigration to and settlement in America, and, in 1906, published his 12-volume Gesammelte ausgewählte Werke.
