AbstractThe immigrant Germans of western Texas had less friendly relations with the native Indians than scholars have assumed, and relations fit the typical pattern of European displacement of Indians. Initial relations were peaceful, but conflicts began in the late 1840s and escalated after the death of the Commanche peace advocates Chief Mopechucope and Chief Santana in 1848. The Germans initially traded with the Indians, but this dwindled into the 1860s as the immigrants became more self sufficient.
