AbstractIn the summer of 1914 Elizabeth (Lizzie) and Marie Martens, travelled from Illinois to Germany to visit relatives, as their parents had done the year before. The young women did not plan an extended stay but the outbreak of World War I left them stranded. Lizzie kept records of their travels, which have been transcribed and typed. They were able to return to America in October of 1914, having travelled to Rotterdam. Lizzie’s and Marie’s parents emigrated from Germany to Illinois in 1867 and 1869; they were married in Illinois in 1876.
