| Abstract | Audio recording of an interview with Raymond Kreilein, conducted in 1995. Ray, the great-grandchild of immigrants from Bavaria, lived in rural Ireland, Indiana, near Jasper, all his life, and still spoke some of the dialect of his ancestors. Here he describes a Neujahrsgruß tradition among the local farmers that was still going strong in the 1930s, where they went from house to house, announcing themselves with the Neujahrsgruß followed by the firing of their guns to welcome the New Year. Includes two documents: theNeujahrsgruss in German with an English translation, and a biographical sketch of Raymond Kreilein. |
