AbstractThe Battle of the Rosebud (also known as the Battle of Rosebud Creek and the Battle Where the Girl Saved Her Brother) took place on June 17, 1876, in the Montana Territory between the United States Army and its Crow and Shoshoni allies under General Crook against a force consisting mostly of Lakota Sioux and Northern Cheyenne Indians during the Great Sioux War of 1876/Black Hills War, 1876-1877. It was a fierce encounter involving more than a thousand cavalrymen and some 5,000 Indian warriors. The Native Americans achieved a tactical victory over General Crook's forces, foreshadowing the disaster of the Battle of the Little Big Horn eight days later. Alexander Johann Sutorius was born in Guienne, Switzerland on May 7, 1837. He immigrated to the United States in 1854, joined the army, and served in the American Civil War. He remained in the service as a career officer, and despite his exemplary conduct at the Battle of the Rosebud, two months later he was court-martialed for drunkenness and dismissed from service. He returned to New York and worked as a storekeeper until he died in May of 1905.
